Viewing distance is decided by focal lenght of the lens. Below is an example with 8.5 to 40mm varifocal lens (built-in to the Medium Range kits for Industrial Grade models).

When we say the Medium Range kit (which has built-in 8.5 to 40mm varifocal lens) is good for target distance from 18ft to 85ft, our target size is supposed to be 7ft high and 9.3ft wide (so that a 5ft 8in person occupies 80% of the screen height, as shown above). When the lens is set at 8.5mm focal length, the target is made at 18ft away from the camera. When the lens is at 40mm, the target is at 85ft. You can adjust the camera lens between 8.5 and 40mm so that the target is located anywhere between 18ft and 85ft. What happens beyond 85ft? See the diagram below.

With the same 40mm focal length set up, the camera can display 7ft high and 9.3ft wide scene at 85ft distance, and it diplays 14ft high and 18.6ft wide scene at 168ft distance. At 85ft distance, a 5ft 8in person covers 80% of the screen height, while only 50% at 168ft distance, as shown above. Lens selection is depending upon your application. If you don't know exactly what lens would be good for your application, contact us with your target size and distance.
